Lorraine Kelly has opened up about her deep regret over a pivotal event in her life. After enduring a lengthy tax battle with HMRC in 2019, Lorraine voiced her one major regret about the whole episode.
The TV host chose to challenge HMRC legally when she received an eye-watering bill for £1.2 million for income tax and contributions to the National Insurance. Lorraine, who features on her own morning show on ITV, argued that as she is a self-employed freelancer who "presents a persona", and hence should not be taxed as an employee of ITV.
The decision of the court ultimately favoured Lorraine and she won her case, however, this difficult experience brought about one key regret for the beloved star. She shared her feelings with The Times, saying, "We won the case, but we lost the PR battle.
Looking back, I probably should have said more about it. I just thought, 'I just want to forget about that and move on." Judge Jennifer Dean made a significant comment during the trial.
She disagreed with the argument that Lorraine simply appeared as herself, saying she was presenting a "persona" The judge saw value in the fact that "We did not accept that Ms Kelly simply appeared as herself - we were satisfied that Ms Kelly presents a persona of herself, she presents herself as a brand and that is the brand ITV sought when engaging her." The judge added further weight to her ruling stating: "All parts of the show are a performance, the act being to perform the role of a friendly, chatty and fun personality. "Quite simply put, the programmes are entertaining, Ms Kelly is entertaining and the 'DNA' referred to is the personality, performance, the ' Lorraine Kelly ' brand that is brought to the programmes." Still being 'Lorraine Kelly'
