Nine people have died in Scotland in the last six months due to a deadly new street drug believed to be 100 times stronger than heroin.
Nitazenes, otherwise known as 'Frankenstein' drugs, have claimed the lives of dozens of people after arriving in the UK and plaguing communities two years ago. The super-strength synthetic opioids are thought to be manufactured in labs before being imported from China via the post.
And since June, 54 deaths in the UK have been linked to the tablets, of which nine were in Scotland. The National Crime Agency (NCA), however, fears this number to be much higher as 40 further cases await testing.
The UK Government is currently working to classify 15 new synthetic opioids as Class A drugs, making them illegal. They have already been associated with tens of thousands of deaths in the US after they hit the country's drug supply in 2019.
It is understood Nitazenes were first detected in the UK in April 2021 after a sample of white powder was found in the back of a taxi in Wakefield, West Yorkshire. Since then, they have been found laced in heroin, cannabis, cocaine, vapes and in black market pills sold as diazepam.
Nitazenes are potent synthetic opioids from a drug class known as benzimidazole-opioids.
They were developed 60 years ago as potential pain relief medication but were never approved for clinical use as they were regarded as too potent and addictive to ever be prescribed. The drugs are produced to provide similar effects to traditional opioids such as heroin and morphine.
Some Nitazenes are thought to be over 600 times more potent than heroin, meaning that a fatal dose could be as small as two grains of sand. Experts say the risk of overdosing is much greater than other class A drugs.
