Despite finishing in the top four last season, Newcastle were eliminated from the Champions League at the group stage, crashed out of the Carabao Cup in the quarter-finals and are currently seventh in the Premier League. With a crucial summer transfer window coming up, it looks like Edwards will be the man they turn to to fill Ashworth's shoes. The Daily Mail reports that the ex-Liverpool boss will be the top candidate.

Since leaving Anfield in June 2022, Edwards has been one of the most sought-after sporting directors in football. Richard Hughes from Bournemouth might also be considered, although Liverpool seem likely to target him. Edwards, who helped Liverpool win the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup and Carabao Cup under Jurgen Klopp, left after a decade saying change was needed. If Newcastle lose Ashworth to United, getting Edwards would be a big win for them.
