Gary Neville has moved to explain what Dan Ashworth would bring to Manchester United after closely watching him at work in a previous role. Ashworth, 52, is currently with Newcastle United as their sporting director after his previous employment with the Football Association (FA), West Brom and Brighton.
The Manchester Evening News revealed back in December that Sir Dave Brailsford had identified Ashworth as his preferred choice to become sporting director. Brailsford and Ashworth have an existing working relationship from previous ventures and Ashworth is understood to want to take up that role at Old Trafford.
However, while Neville acknowledges that it will not be straightforward to pluck Ashworth from another Premier League side, he reckons his would-be appointment could be worth its weight in gold. United spent £180million on three players last summer and their outlay over recent seasons has not always had the best return.

Ashworth, meanwhile, has earned rave reviews for his work in the transfer market. Neville was a backroom coach for England when the Newcastle supremo worked as the FA's director of elite development.
Neville was pressed on Ashworth during TV coverage for United's win against Luton on Sunday afternoon. The ex-United captain told Sky Sports: "I don't know if Dan has anything in his contract, or how easy it is to get a sporting director out of his contract, I'm not sure how it works.
