Former Manchester United scout Marcel Bout was among those in attendance for Newcastle United’s dramatic draw with Bournemouth on Saturday.
Bout joined Newcastle as a scout in November after his eight-year stint at Old Trafford came to an end in April 2022. There has been plenty of attention paid to off-the-pitch matters at both clubs due to United targeting a move for Newcastle’s sporting director Dan Ashworth.
The Ineos group have already begun to address the need for a new structure at the club by bringing in Omar Berrada as CEO and MEN Sport has reported that Ashworth wants to join United as sporting director. The timing of Bout’s public appearance came amid growing uncertainty around Ashworth’s future, who also watched a late Matt Ritchie goal earn a point for Newcastle

ChronicleLive has reported that former United scout Bout had spent the weekend in Newcastle and was part of the club’s scheduled scoutings summit. Ashworth is said to have attended his planned meetings with scouts, despite concerns that the sporting director could potentially pass on knowledge of Newcastle’s future transfer plans to United.
Bout was previously described as a “welcome addition” by Newcastle boss Eddie upon his appointment at St James’ Park. The Dutchman is a close associate of ex-United boss Louis van Gaal, previously working as his assistant at Bayern Munich, as well as being an opposition analyst and head of global scouting at Old Trafford. After leaving United, Bout was critical of the Glazers’ way of running the club.
