New data shows that Netflix subscriptions have seen a spine after the platform cracked down on password-sharing.
Monzo's yearly spending data, which reveals the shopping habits of more than eight million British customers, showed spending on Netflix increased by nearly a quarter following its new policy in May. This was compared with the first few months of the year.
The streaming platform introduced a new cost for users who wanted to add extra members to use their accounts outside of the household. WHile the move was originally criticised, it seems to have done well for the company after it revealed in October that it had 9 million new subscribers around the world.

Meanwhile, cinemas in the UK saw a boost in spending around the release of Barbie and Oppenheimer, with surgery of 260 per cent on July 22 when both films came out.
People were also found to have spent more cash on tickets to live shows. Spending at Ticketmaster shot up by 340 per cent on February 7 - when Beyonce released tickets for her Renaissance world tour.
Furthermore, spending also shot up on July 10 by 460 per cent for Taylor Swift's Eras Tour pre-sale. Monzo is launching its "Year in Monzo" feature which allows customers to have insights into their personal spending habits over the past year.
Users will be able to access their own end-of-year report today, being given information such as whether they are among the top 5 per cent of spenders on certain apps, including Uber and Deliveroo.

Ricky Gervais has addressed a petition that was launched for him to remove a controversial joke from his upcoming comedy special.Armageddon, which will air on Netflix on Christmas Day, features a joke about Gervais being busy making videos for terminally ill children for the Make-A-Wish Foundation.The Office UK star shared that he makes the videos only on request, saying he doesn’t burst into hospitals and go, ‘Wake up baldy’”.He then added that he starts his videos to the children saying: “Why didn’t you wish to get better? What, you fucking ret***ed* as well?”Although he clarified that he was making a joke, many viewers were outraged at the sneak-peak of the one-hour comedy special, for which Gervais has already put out a warning, saying he discusses “sex, death, paedophilia, race, religion, disability, free speech, global warming, the holocaust, and Elton John’ in Armageddon,” adding that “if they [the audience] don’t approve of jokes about any of these things, then please don’t watch.”One viewer, who is a parent of a child who has suffered from cancer, launched a petition asking Netflix to remove the skit. The petition called Gervais “not only distasteful but also heartless” and criticised the “derogatory language” he used.It also posed the question of “how a writer or anyone at Netflix could green light such appalling content”.Now, Gervais has responded to the petition, telling BBC Radio 5 Live: “I’m literally saying in the joke that I don’t do that.

Peaky Blinders spin-offs are in development at Netflix, according to reports.As reported by Bloomberg, the company is planning two spin-offs based on the British gangster series, which came to an end in 2022 after six seasons.One of these shows is said to be “set in Boston during the middle of the 20th century”, a couple of decades after Peaky Blinders. The other, meanwhile, is believed to be centred around Shelby family matriarch Polly, who was originally played by the late Helen McCrory.The only confirmed continuation of Peaky Blinders on-screen is an upcoming sequel movie, written by the show’s original creator Steven Knight.Speaking to Radio Times recently, Knight said filming on the movie should commence in the middle of 2024.“I’m just working on the final bits of it at the moment,” Knight said.
Chicken Run is getting a sequel.Directed by Sam Fell, Chicken Run: Dawn Of The Nugget sees Ginger (Thandiwe Newton) and Rocky (Zachary Levi) on a mission to secure their freedom after escaping Tweedy’s farm.The film has largely replaced the voice cast from the 2000 original, with Thandiwe Newton and Zachary Levi taking over from Julia Sawalha and Mel Gibson in the lead roles. The returning cast members include Jane Horrocks as Babs, Imelda Staunton as Bunty, Lynn Ferguson as Mac and Miranda Richardson as Mrs Tweedy.Nick Park and Peter Lord, who directed the original Chicken Run, serve as executive producers on the sequel alongside Carla Shelley.The film will be available to stream on Friday December 15 from 8am GMT in the UK.
