It may have been slaughtered by critics, but Rebel Moon — Part One: A Child of Fire was comfortably the most-watched title over the holiday season among UK Netflix subscribers.
Zack Snyder‘s space opera was watched by 16.5M people over the seven days after its December 21 launch, according to official UK streaming ratings provided by overnights.tv.
The performance, which includes viewing across mobile devices, will almost certainly put Rebel Moon among the best-performing titles on Netflix in the UK last year.
The British figure is supported by Netflix’s global data, which shows that Snyder’s sci-fi epic had nearly 24M views in its first four days.
Back in the UK, Rebel Moon was more than 10M viewers ahead of Ricky Gervais‘ Armageddon stand-up special, which by no means performed poorly.
The comedy show was watched by 6M Brits in the week after its December 25 premiere, according to overnights.tv, which takes its data from Barb, the UK’s official audience research body.
Critics did not consider Armageddon to be among Gervais’ finest stand-up work, but he continues to be an audience banker for Netflix.
The other film that had a strong showing on Netflix in December was Leave the World Behind. The dystopian thriller starring Julia Roberts was streamed by nearly 9M Brits in its first seven days.

Zack Sharf Digital News Director Julia Roberts was interviewed for a Vogue UK fashion spread by her “Notting Hill” director Richard Curtin, who asked the Oscar winner if she feels “responsibility to other women” when choosing her movie roles as an A-list star for well over three decades. “Do you ever think, ‘I’m representing something?” Curtis asked Roberts. “I think it would be more to the point that the things I choose not to do are representative of me,” Roberts answered, noting that “my G-rated career” is an example.
Julia Roberts has opened up about Notting Hill, sharing the part of it she found most “uncomfortable”.Roberts, who recently featured in Netflix movie, Leave The World Behind, famously played a Hollywood star in Richard Curtis’ 1999 romantic comedy, who falls in love with a clumsy bookshop owner, played by Hugh Grant. The movie was a huge success, making more than $360million at the box office, and becoming one of the highest-grossing British films of all time. Along with Golden Globe and BAFTA nominations, it won the Audience Award for Most Popular Film in 2000.However, in a new interview with British Vogue, the Pretty Woman star has shared there was something she didn’t like about the movie.Speaking with Curtis himself for the interview, she explained that she’d struggled with previous roles where there weren’t many similarities between them and herself.Due to her role as Anna Scott, a seemingly typical famous Hollywood movie star, she faced this problem again with Notting Hill.
OK, so we just detailed Zack Snyder talking about pitching Lucasfilm an R-rated “Star Wars” space opera movie. They eventually turned it down, and he turned that idea into “Rebel Moon,” which is on Netflix now, with a sequel, “Rebel Moon Part Two: The Scargiver,” arriving on the streaming service in April.
Zack Snyder’s “Rebel Moon” is on Netflix now, and obviously, it’s a divisive film with a 22% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Our review wasn’t pretty blunt about it, too, calling it “lifeless and superficial,” but it’s still fascinating that Netflix went all in on it, and a sequel, “Rebel Moon: The Scargiver,” is coming in April 2024 (read our review here; check out our 2024 blockbuster preview here).
