With spring now here, many people are eager to start working on their gardens, especially their lawns. But some gardeners might be surprised to find their beautiful green space covered in moss.
TV star and host of BBC's Gardeners' World, Monty Don, suggests that it's best to take care of lawns now before the weather gets warmer, as reported by Liverpool Echo. However, before any new growth can occur, you'll need to remove the unwanted moss from your lawn.
Moss tends to spread across your grass during winter because it thrives in the wet, dark conditions of the colder months. On the other hand, grass doesn't grow much when the temperature drops below 8C, which gives moss an opportunity to spread.
While moss isn't always bad and can be beneficial for tiny creatures and helps reduce flooding by soaking up water, many gardeners prefer their lawns to look like green carpets and choose to remove it.
If you have moss on your lawn, it likely means your soil is shaded, doesn't drain well, and is acidic. Moss loves these conditions, especially where there's lots of thatch (the layer of organic matter that builds up at the base of the grass).
