If you have spent countless hours outside trying to create your perfect garden, there's nothing more irritating than neighbourhood cats coming in and wreaking havoc.
There are many ways to keep cats away and some methods are more effective than others. For example, using harsh chemicals is not recommended, as these can be dangerous for animals and humans.
However, experts say there's a natural homemade 'repellent' you can make at home - and it only requires four simple ingredients.
Cats are very inquisitive animals who love to explore, but it can be really frustrating if they're going to the toilet in your garden and digging up your plants. They usually do this because they're following their instincts to bury their waste and mark their territory with their scent.
The New Zealand Cat Foundation (NZCF), which helps abandoned cats find loving homes, has shared a homemade remedy to stop cats from misbehaving in your garden. The organisation explained that cats are very sensitive to smells.
This sensitivity to smells can be the best way to keep them out of your plants. You can make a natural spray filled with citrus fruit peels in order to help repel them, reports the Mirror.
The NZCF said: "Cats dislike certain smells, which means those scents are perfect to use in your plot to keep them out of your garden. It's perfectly possible to be a cat lover and keep cats from pooping in your garden."
Citrus smells are effective at keeping cats at bay because they have super sensitive noses. They're likely to stay away from anywhere that smells like citrus, thanks to the limonene and linalool that works to keep them at a distance.
Here's how you can make a homemade cat repellent spray.
