The iconic Burns statue in Dumfries is set to be cleaned up.
Large patches of “organic growth” have been discovered on the artwork at the top of the High Street.
An application to clean the statue will be discussed at the planning applications committee on Thursday.
Planning permission is needed as the statue is classed as a listed building.
In a report for the meeting, case officer Claire Ingram says the statue was last cleaned and repaired in 2018.
A report by experts reveals that work to fix cracks and sandstone in the plinth remains intact with only “very small areas of slight deterioration”.
But the report adds: “Large areas are covered with infestations of organic growth, in the form of lichens and algae at the statue itself and thicker infestation of mosses at the plinth”.
Other concerns were blue graffiti, “staining from an unknown liquid” and damage to some of the lettering.
The experts recommend that the statue and plinth are “fully documented” and then cleaned, with wooden hand tools used to remove some of the lichen and moss before a further clean.
The staining and graffiti would be removed after tests to determine the best methods and the damaged lettering “reshaped with wooden hand tools”.
It is also recommended there is an annual inspection and a biocide applied every year to stop future organic growth.
The report notes that planting around the plinth is partly the cause of the problem, but if this remains “low-level”, there won’t be much impact on the statue.
Councillors are recommended to approve the application to clean the statue.
Last year, Torthorwald man Donald Gibson expressed concerns about the state of the marble statue, suggesting it could be removed to be restored and allow
