The bowler hats, the checked cravats, the baffling lingo — somehow there’s nothing like a British crime series for sheer bingeing delight.With generally top-flight production values, clever writing and crackling casts, these series are as well-made as they are fun to watch.

Joe Otterson TV ReporterShowtime is developing a drama series set in the world of professional football, Variety has learned.The untitled series is executive produced by former NFL quarterback and current NFL broadcaster Tony Romo as well as Chace Crawford and Drew Comins. eOne would produce the series for Showtime.

Bill Nighy (Love Actually) has been tapped to star opposite Chiwetel Ejiofor and Naomie Harris in Showtime’s The Man Who Fell To Earth drama series, based on the Walter Tevis novel and the cult classic 1976 film starring David Bowie. Nighy will play the role played by Bowie in the film in the series, which comes from Alex Kurtzman, Jenny Lumet and John Hlavin. It will premiere later this year.

Arielle Kebbel is set for a major recurring role opposite Oliver Stark in Fox drama series 9-1-1.

Joe Otterson TV ReporterAMC has ordered two new original series — “Demascus” and “Invitation to a Bonfire.”Both shows were developed under the network’s script to series model. Both shows hail from AMC Studios and have been given six-episode orders with an eye to debut them on AMC and AMC Plus in 2023.“Demascus” is a half-hour series about life as an ordinary Black man in America today.

Fox has given a script commitment with penalty to White House Doctor, a one-hour drama based on Dr. Connie Mariano’s memoir, from Alyssa Milano and her Peace by Peace Productions, A+E Studios, where Milano is under a deal, Range Media Partners and Fox Entertainment. There are no plans for Milano to star.

The first of these missions on a spacecraft known as Ark One encounters a catastrophic event causing massive destruction and loss of life.
