Joe Wright’s Cyrano twirls onto 797 screens, the highest-profile specialty release in weeks (as the market awaits Focus Features The Outfit with Mark Rylance and Sony Pictures Classics Mothering Sunday). But the well reviewed period musical romance from UAR starring Peter Dinklage is landing in a tough place. Industry estimates anticipate a low single digit opening given the inconsistent reception for movie musicals and the fact that its key older demos, especially women, have been the slowest to return to theaters.

EXCLUSIVE: Vertical Entertainment has acquired North American and UK/IRE rights to the political comedy The Hater, from writer-director Joey Ally (Uproot, Are You Still Singing), in which she stars alongside Bruce Dern (Nebraska, The Hateful Eight), Meredith Hagner (Search Party, Palm Springs), D’Angelo Lacy (aka musical artist Black Gatsby), Ian Harding (Pretty Little Liars, Ford v Ferrari), Ali Larter (The Last Victim, Resident Evil: The Final Chapter), and Nora Dunn (Together Together, The Lost Husband). The independent distributor has slated it for a day-and-date release on March 18.

If any genre’s stock has grown over the past decade, it’s been that of true crime. A trend that began in the mid-2010s with podcasts and docuseries like HBO’s “The Jinx” and Netflix’s “Making a Murderer” soon gave way to splashy TV fictionalizations like “Mindhunter” and FX’s “American Crime Story” series.

Written by Lynn Harrod who serves as co-showrunner with Wilson, Concepción follows the lives of an Asian-American kingpin and his extended crime family that lords over Historic Filipinotown (“HiFi”) in Los Angeles. The series is set across 28 years, alternating between the eras of 1992 and 2020. At the center of the series is Paulo “Pepe” Concepción, aka “Lolo Pepe,” who built a vast criminal empire through small-business extortion, gambling, racketeering and most of all the street sales of “Shabu” (Filipino meth). Over the span of the story, Lolo and his family live and work within the underworld of HiFi. Their morals, ethics and loyalties continually are tested as they struggle to revitalize HiFi and expand the power of their empire.
