Met Office delivers verdict on chances of August heatwaves in UK

The Met Office has given an update on the chances of a UK heatwave this August, following a drizzly July. It comes as the country was hit with spells of rain and gusty winds this weekend.
This June was the UK's hottest on record, thanks to high pressure and persistent high temperatures unusual for the time of year. Some locations saw temperatures top a scorching 32C - but by July, weeks of heatwaves and glorious sunshine were soon replaced with miserable, wet weather.
And according to the Met Office's latest update, it doesn't look like we'll be getting another heatwave anytime soon. On Monday, July 31, the forecaster revealed: "There are currently no strong signals for any warmer or more settled weather, with the unsettled regime looking most likely to continue to dominate at least for the first half of the month.

The Met Office continued: "On balance, the greatest chance of seeing any brief, drier and slightly warmer interludes, would most likely be later in August. However, it looks fairly unlikely that we will see any prolonged or excessive heat, with the chance of heatwaves here in the UK being lower than some recent Augusts."
It's disappointing news for those whose children have now broken up for the school holidays, or for families with summer trips booked around the UK. Looking at the first week of August, the Met Office has also warned that unseasonably strong winds might affect outdoor activities.
