‘Barbie’ has hit $1billion at the global box office

The film lands in 3,800 North American theaters on Friday and will compete with last weekend’s champion “Blue Beetle” for second place on domestic charts behind “Barbie.” Greta Gerwig’s box office behemoth is expected to return to the No. 1 spot in its sixth weekend of release, with projections of $12 million to $14 million between Friday and Sunday.

Blue Beetle has dethroned Barbie at the US box office, ending the film’s four-week reign at the number one spot.As reported by Variety, the DC superhero film took the top spot with a lower-than-expected debut of $25.4million (£19.9million) in the US. Globally, the film earned $43million (£33.7million) in its opening weekend, against a production budget of $104million (£81.7million).Barbie, meanwhile, fell to second place with $21.5million (£16.8million), an impressive amount considering it was released last month.In the US, Barbie is expected to overtake The Super Mario Bros.

Oppenheimer has become the highest-grossing film ever to not reach the top spot at the box office.Christopher Nolan‘s historical drama — which sees Cillian Murphy star as Robert J. Oppenheimer, the real-life American physicist who played a pivotal role in the creation of the atomic bomb — has been a critical and commercial success following its release in cinemas last month.The film recently became the most successful WWII-related film of all time after surpassing $500million (£392m) at the global box office.

Barbie has become the highest-grossing film in Warner Bros. history in the US, overtaking Christopher Nolan’s 2008 film The Dark Knight.As reported by Variety, Barbie has crossed $537.5million at the domestic box office to take the record.

Led by Rajinikanth-starrer Jailer and Anil Sharma’s Gadar 2, box office in India reached record-breaking numbers this weekend. According to the Producers Guild of India and Multiplex Association of India, the August 11-13 frame was the busiest single weekend since the beginning of the pandemic. What’s more, across three days, ticket sales hit more than 390 crore ($47M), a new all-time theatrical gross record for the biggest combined weekend in history.

Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer has reached the $500M global milestone, on its way to an estimated $551M through Sunday. This would make it the filmmaker’s fifth-highest-grossing film of all time, ahead of Dunkirk. The worldwide total through Friday is $499.3M, meaning that it has already topped the five-century mark today.

Variety, the dual release of Barbie and Oppenheimer led to a sizeable uptick in UK box office numbers in July. Earlier this year, meanwhile, The Super Mario Bros. Movie had the most successful global opening ever for an animated film.At the time of writing (August 4), the video game adaptation is still the highest-grossing movie of the year, earning over $1.3billion at the global box office (via BoxOfficeMojo).
