A memorial service for former Dumfries Tory councillor, Lieutenant Colonel John Charteris MBE, is to be held tomorrow at 2pm at the Crichton Memorial Church in Dumfries.
A Lochar ward councillor for 15 years, he died on December 23 aged 83. His family, including his wife Antoinette, his three children Camilla, Annabel and Nick and 11 grandchildren, had a private funeral at the time.
Tomorrow’s memorial is a chance for the public to pay their respects and there will be an input from Dumfries Veterans Garden, which he strongly supported.
In the region, he was also instrumental in building up the Army Cadet Force and is also known locally for the work he put into Marie Curie Cancer Care, for which he was the chief fundraiser for south west Scotland.
Born in Hampstead into a military family, he attended RMA Sandhurst and was commissioned into the Royal Scots in 1961 where he served for 37 years.
He served during the Troubles in Northern Ireland between 1969 and 1972 – the last two in command of a company of 1st Battalion Royal Scots (The Royal Regiment) – and was awarded the Military Cross in 1973 for outstanding bravery.
During his illustrious career he saw active service in Aden and Yemen; flew Sioux helicopters in Malaya, Borneo; and worked with the Joint Service Intelligence staff in Hong Kong.
In 1990 he became Commandant of the 80,000-acre Otterburn Training Area in Northumberland.
He was appointed an MBE for his successful efforts to integrate large scale exercises with substantial advances in conservation, without which military training in the area was likely to be banned entirely.
He retired from the Army in 1995.
