Kate Forbes has said that Humza Yousaf lacks a "big vision" for Scotland, according to reports.
The ex-finance secretary also hinted that she would likely run again for the SNP leadership. The MSP for Skye, Lochaber and Badenoch suggested that the First Minister was not inspiring people.
Forbes was beaten by Yousaf last year in the contest to replace Nicola Sturgeon. The race was narrow, with Yousaf taking 52 per cent of the vote and Forbes winning 48 per cent.
The Times reported that Forbes told the Holyrood Sources podcast that she would continue to be an MSP if she thought she could “deal with the root symptoms and not just tread water”.
The paper also said that she suggested that she wanted to have a second go at the leadership.
But she added: “All of us need to be enthused and inspired by what the current big vision is and for individuals who are working there — we too need to be enthused because if we’re not, then there are alternative jobs.”
When questioned by podcast host and former Alex Salmond chief of staff Geoff Aberdein, she conceded that Yousaf's leadership had been underwhelming and that the SNP would lose a good chunk of its seats at the general election.
She said: “People need to be inspired by leadership. They need to be inspired by the thought that things are going to get better. And this is going to be a challenging year all round.
"And as much as I back the party and the current first minister, we can only win elections if you have a big vision we can get behind.”
The podcast was recorded at an event to celebrate 25 years of devolution at Edinburgh’s Assembly Rooms. Former first ministers Salmond, Jack McConnell and Henry McLeish all took part.
