The Queen is likely to have been one of the hardest members of the royal family to buy a present for and Meghan Markle found herself with the task of finding the perfect Christmas gift for the late monarch just months after she became engaged to Prince Harry.
The Duchess of Sussex reportedly managed to come up with a hilariously unconventional gift for her husband's grandmother - a singing toy hamster that her corgis went on to maul to bits.
According to the Daily Star, her Majesty was delighted with the gift and burst out laughing when she opened it as she remarked: “It can keep my dogs company.”
A source said: “Meghan bought a little hamster that sings with a little rope for Her Majesty. It was so funny, especially when the corgis tried to take hold of the toy.”
The royal family give each other presents on Christmas Eve as a nod to their German lineage and it's believed they gift one another with jokey items as they already have everything they could ever want or need, the Mirror reports.
The source claims that they also have a very traditional way of arranging their presents.
The insider explained: “The gifts were on trestle tables in the white drawing room where the names were at each table for each family.”
Many of the royal traditions the Queen incorporated were maintained during the first festive season her family celebrated after her passing in September last year.
King Charles kept up their usual festivities by inviting all of the family to Sandringham.
The Prince and Princess of Wales joined the King and Queen Camilla along with Charles' siblings Princess Anne and Prince Edward.
