Frenkie de Jong has told Barcelona he is 'open' to taking a pay cut to remain at the club amid Manchester United's interest, according to reports.
The latest development in the transfer saga is not the news that United fans wanted to hear, as reports from Spanish outlet AS (as per the Express) have thrown cold water over the potential move. De Jong is reported to have told the La Liga club that he is willing to take a pay cut on his reported £360,000 weekly wage to remain in Spain.
The 25-year-old signed a bumper contract when he joined Barcelona in the summer of 2019 and now it is reported the midfielder is willing to stay at the Nou Camp for a lot less than he initially agreed to. The report also claims that Xavi held talks with the player recently as United look to try and find a way to tempt the Dutchman to the Premier League.

Elsewhere, the Mail Online report that United are monitoring Red Bull Salzburg striker Benjamin Sesko.
The report says that the Reds are among a handful of teams interested in signing the 19-year-old. Sesko, although young, will not be a cheap option for Ten Hag's side as it is believed that any club wanting to make a move for the player will to have to pay up to £55m for the Slovenian.
The youngster has already made a strong start to Salzburg's season, scoring two goals in two games for the Austrian side. United will have to fend off the likes of Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund as interest in signing the striker grows ahead of the September 1 transfer deadline.
