The Leonid meteor shower is set to light up the UK's night sky this weekend, meaning stargazers could be in for a spectacular show. The best time to catch this dazzling display will be between midnight and dawn during the early hours of Saturday, when the meteor shower is set to peak.
The Leonids, known for their fast and bright meteors, are linked with Comet Tempel-Tuttle. They seem to stream from the constellation Leo the Lion, which gives them their name.
As the comet orbits the Sun, it leaves behind a small trail of debris. This debris enters Earth's atmosphere at speeds of up to 70 kilometres per second, vaporising and creating the streaks of light we know as meteors.

You don't need any special equipment to see this spectacle - it'll be visible to the naked eye. But for the best view, find a spot away from streetlights and other sources of light, and be patient.
According to the Met Office, the best displays will be seen in central, southern and eastern parts of the UK, as long as there are breaks between showers.
Operational meteorologist Dan Stroud said: "We have a waxing moon this weekend so there should be dark skies. There will be a band of wind and heavy rain moving across the country, but by the time the sun goes down on Saturday, most of it should have cleared, and there will be some decent breaks between showers."
Mr Stroud added: "It will be hit and miss, but there's a chance of clear spells, especially the further east you are."
