Coronation Street bosses have thrown their support behind longest-serving Weatherfield legend Bill Roache, who plays Ken Barlow on the ITV soap. Bill, now 91, was reportedly forced to file "for bankruptcy" due to his financial situation. The reports come as a result of a petition he has now had launched against him by HMRC.
According to The Mirror, His Majesty's Revenue and Customs office wouldn't reference Bill directly as they "don't comment" on individual cases. Instead, a spokesperson said they do "everything" they can to help those suffering financially and who have tax debts. "We take a supportive approach to dealing with customers who have tax debts, and do everything we can to help those who engage with us to get out of debt, such as offering instalment plans," the statement read.
"We only petition for bankruptcy as a last resort," the spokesperson then added. Since then, Coronation Street bosses have now confirmed that Bill is very much still listed as a cast member on the ITV soap, and his contract is still in place. “We’re really sorry to hear of Bill’s financial situation," a spokesperson told the Independent.
"Bill has an ongoing contract with Coronation Street and remains a much-loved member of the cast.” Bill has been at the heart of the cobbles' dramatic storylines and iconic plots since 1960, when the soap first began. The star is understood to receive a £250,000 a year pay check for his role as the beloved Ken Barlow. He's also thought to be the "highest-paid member of the cast".
