It’s a Wonderful Knife. Kennedy’s debut effort, 2020’s Freaky, a robustly entertaining riff on body swap films, co-written with Christopher Landon, was met with both critical and audience acclaim.
But what to do for a follow-up?“I thought, ‘There haven’t been a ton of Christmas horror movies. That’s what I want to tackle next,'” says the 43-year-old Ohio native, before we’re briefly and adorably interrupted on Zoom by his dog, Bandit.
“I thought, ‘What if I took a Christmas classic and turned it into a slasher movie?’ And It’s A Wonderful Life immediately came to mind.”The beloved 1946 Frank Capra chestnut concerns George Bailey (Jimmy Stewart), a despondent businessman who, on Christmas Eve, decides the world would be better off without him. His suicide is stopped by an angel who shows him what life in his small town would have been like had he never existed.
The results aren’t reassuring.“As an adult, you realize how fucking dark that movie really is,” says Kennedy, “and how scary, at times, it can actually be. There is a horror element to it in the last 30 minutes.
So I sat down and started creating my own narrative, and was like, ‘I have a really genuine way to tell a heartfelt Christmas movie through the lens of a horror movie.'”Directed by Tyler MacIntyre, the resulting film cleaves faithfully to the original’s basic premise, with a few shrewd twists to give it a bloody razor’s edge. It’s a Wonderful Knife, which also winks to Back to the Future Part II, is ultimately less terrifying than it is profound, tapping into familiar horror-comedy tropes while wrapping them in a tale abundant with heart, self-discovery, and philosophical richness. It’s also drenched in queer sensibilities — not surprising since Kennedy is a

Jem Aswad Executive Editor, Music How does a six-year-old song become a hit? In 2023, of course the short answer is TikTok, but it takes a lot more than that to make a song into a genuine hit single — let alone take the longest climb to No. 1 for a non-holiday song in the history of the Billboard Hot 100. That’s the story of the Weeknd’s “Die for You” — No.
“There’s something really special about Mario games,” says composer Brian Tyler. As a lifelong fan of the Mario series, Tyler was excited to bring the music from all of those worlds into a new animated universe for The Super Mario Bros. Movie. “I realized by hearing the music outside of the game, it immediately takes you back in a way that’s different from movies,” he says. “With movies, you typically see them once or twice, whereas when you add together the playtime of any game you like, you’re in that universe for days.”

Jem Aswad Executive Editor, Music If there is a bible for the music industry, it’s Donald Passman’s book, “All You Need to Know About the Music Business.” Since the first edition came out more than 30 years ago, it has guided countless musicians and executives, and has prevented many of them from making decisions they’d later regret. Considering the deep detail Passman gets into about contracts, royalties and other complicated business arrangements, his tone is remarkably conversational, and he makes sure readers don’t miss the important stuff: The section on business managers begins with him saying “Listen to me!!!” in italics with several exclamation marks.
Owen Gleiberman Chief Film Critic “Thanksgiving,” a cheerfully debased — or maybe I should say de-basted — slasher film directed by Eli Roth, marks the second time that one of the luscious mock trailers from Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez’s “Grindhouse” has been spun into a feature film. The first such movie, Rodriguez’s “Machete,” worked better than anyone might have expected; it gave Danny Trejo perhaps the best lead role of his career, and it was tasty enough in its high-zooming vengeful action hyperbole to spawn a sequel. Roth’s trailer for “Thanksgiving,” on the other hand, was a bloody perfect, outrageously transgressive parody of the holiday horror genre that had long gone out of style.
Argylle trailer has landed courtesy of Universal. The film is the latest from Matthew Vaughn (Layer Cake, X-Men: Origins series, Kingsman) and stars Henry Cavill, Bryce Dallas Howard, John Cena, Dua Lipa, Bryan Cranston, Sofia Boutella, Ariana DeBose, Catherine O’Hara and Samuel L. Jackson.
Directed by Bucky Le Boeuf and Cooper Roberts, All You Need is Blood finds an aspiring auteur tasked with making a horror film. Bucky (Logan Riley Bruner) has dreams of becoming the next arthouse directing sensation. The problem is that the industry in his small town is lacking. When he hears about a local film contest, he and best friend Vish (Neel Sethi) dive in. The problem however, is that the film has to be a horror story and Bucky faints at the sight of blood. The duo hit the jackpot when they stumble across the start of the zombie apocalypse, but can Bucky make it artsy enough? With the main character named after Bucky, there is obviously a strong vein of biographical content to All You Need is Blood. Granted, it’s unlikely that anyone he grew up with ever turned into a zombie, but the film is a clear love letter to his time as a young struggling filmmaker.
Brandy Clark is responsible for half of those nominations.
