An investigation has revealed which Greater Manchester Hospitals have been constructed with dangerous and crumbling concrete.
A total of 34 NHS buildings were among public buildings constructed in England with reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (RAAC) between the 1960s and the 1990s - a special type of concrete that contains air bubbles.
The material was used in hospitals and schools, as well as commercial buildings, because it offered a cheap, lightweight, fireproof and thermally efficient alternative to normal concrete.

However, RAAC has a fixed lifespan of around 30 years, after which its integrity comes into question - an issue which has been known about since the 1990s. Now, as RAAC blocks crumble in NHS hospitals the government has been slammed for 'not fixing the roof when the sun was shining' over safety risk fears.
Across England, NHS buildings and hospitals were previously described as 'ticking time bombs' that could 'collapse without warning', with repair costs mounting to over £1 billion.
In Greater Manchester, a Mirror investigation into the scandal revealed that The Royal Oldham Hospital roof and The Salford Royal Turnberg building are among those built with RAAC.
The issue was thrown into sharp relief in 2018 when a roof at Singlewell Primary School, in Gravesend, built with RAAC, collapsed out of the blue. At the time, it was a weekend and nobody was inside.
It is the fear of such a collapse being replicated in a busy hospital that has NHS trusts taking drastic measures as they apply for millions of pounds of funding to try and replace the affected buildings.
