Jerk Junction 'going back to its roots' to serve customers for first time since devastating fire

Popular Caribbean restaurant Jerk Junction has opened up an outdoor barbeque space to be able to serve customers for the first time since a devastating fire gutted part of its building.
Emergency services were called to the Chorlton venue on Manchester Road on August 23 after a fire started in the restaurant before spreading to the flats above. At the time, owners said they were ‘devastated’ by the blaze.
But, with the sun out in full force this week, staff at Jerk Junction lit up the oil drums and took to the streets to sell their famous jerk chicken once again - with people lining up for the popular meal.

“It’s been tough for us all,” owner Jake Shaffi tells the M.E.N. “Obviously, we thought we would be able to move on with things much quicker but we’re still not sure how long it’s going to take for us to be able to reopen the building.
“The whole building needs a whole rewire and we’ve got no power. There was a lot of smoke and water damage. We are still trying to figure out the full scope of it.
“We just sat down and thought about what we could do to keep the place going in the meantime. With the nice weather right now, it just made sense for us.
From 12pm until 8pm - or whenever the food is sold out - the restaurant, running via a generator, will have its outdoor space opened up where people can come and order jerk chicken, curry goat, peppered steak and oxtail from the barbeque, or get themselves some rice and peas or homemade cakes.
Jake explains: “Authentic Caribbean food is actually all cooked outside on oil drums anyway so it’s not like we’re doing anything new, we’re just going back to our roots.
