A couple were forced to postpone their wedding after a horror smash put the groom in hospital weeks before the big day. James Barlow was told he was 'lucky to survive' after a 60mph crash involving his motorbike and a car.
The 36-year-old had to be airlifted to hospital and suffered life-changing injuries. He was still in hospital on the day he should have been exchanging vows with Nicole Barlow, then Simpson.
The couple were able to marry a year later, but Nicole admits her life partner 'could have died' in the collision. She said: “James doesn’t talk about the accident much - he doesn’t want to be defined by it.

"But he referred to it in his speech at our wedding and I realised we’re so lucky to be here - and lucky too that he’s recovered as fully as he has. It’s amazing to be finally married, especially when I remember that he could have died. It just made the wedding even more beautiful."
James and Nicole, 32, met in 2016 and got engaged in 2019. They set a date for August 29, 2020 but, on August 2, disaster struck. James was riding his motorbike on the A414, near Chelmsford, when he collided with a car.
James, an automotive design engineer from Chelmsford, Essex, said: "The police said I was lucky to survive. They said I used eight of my nine lives. I remember lying on the roadside and thinking 'oh this is a bad one - it's not just a little bump'. I feel very lucky that the first two people on the scene were nurses. Of all the people who use that busy road."
