Phil Foden insists England showed a different side to their game during their much-criticised performance vs Serbia as he defended his own contribution in the Euro 2024 opener.
Foden has been singled out by some for failing to truly impact the game, with Jude Bellingham's early header settling a tight affair. Pundits including Cesc Fabregas challenged Foden to 'step up' like Bellingham has if he wants to be considered a top player for England, sparking debate over his best position and whether the England set-up is actually suited to him.
Manager Gareth Southgate defended Foden, and the Manchester City man has now given his verdict on the game, and his own performance in collaboration with Bellingham. Speaking to England's in-house media in Germany, Foden defended the overall performance and insisted the three points were the most important thing.

"The first game in a major tournament is always the most difficult. It's important to get off to a win and we did that," he said. "It was difficult at times, obviously we had to defend and dig deep. But I think it shows a different side to us and if we're going to win something, I think that we have to do that."
Reflecting on himself, and also teammate Bellingham, Foden said: "Jude's an exceptional talent. He carries himself really well. He's a leader now. Our link-up play is good at times and it's improving. It can keep getting better. He's an exciting talent and I hope I can keep playing with him."
