And so as Ten Hag made wholesale changes at half-time during Wednesday's 1-0 win over Lyon, Evans stepped out for the Reds 3059 days after his last appearance against Newcastle United in March 2015. His second spell at the club has come 16 years after his debut.
Evans was one of many young talents that caught the eye of United's scouting network in Ireland, having excelled for Greenisland FC's junior sides.
The defender was invited to Manchester United's Centre of Excellence in Belfast as a nine-year-old before being brought over for a trial a year later. He impressed on both occasions and once he and his family upped sticks and moved to the city, he began training with the academy full-time.
