It started with eggs, sugar, flour and a dream. When Candice Bannister started her cake company from her kitchen 14 years ago, she had no idea it would go on to make almost £1m.
A keen baker, the mum-of-two had always made cakes for family and friends alongside her job as a supported housing manager.
Eager to turn her hobby into a profitable side hustle, the 41-year-old got the idea to create a business when her husband Oliver bought her £300 worth of baking ingredients in 2010.

Candice, from Dukinfield, launched Candy’s Cupcakes not long after coming off maternity leave and watched as her Facebook page grew.
Before long, she was receiving orders from local people she didn’t know, officially registering the company in February 2011.
With orders continuing to roll in when Candice welcomed a second child a few years later, the mum was left struggling to juggle the business and her social housing job.
That’s when she decided to take the leap and quit her job in 2014 to focus on Candy’s Cupcakes full time – and she hasn’t looked back since.
Today, the business ships its sweet treats nationwide and announced a massive £900,000 turnover in 2023, with plans to break the one million pound turnover imminently.
“I’m really proud of what I’ve achieved,” the mum told the Manchester Evening News. “I knew I wouldn’t have been able to do it without the support of my family and friends behind me.
“It’s flown by because it’s something I’ve enjoyed doing. I can’t imagine doing anything else now.”
Candice says Candy’s Cupcakes really took off once she set up a website and started shipping nationwide in 2018.
