A health expert has issued a warning over physician associates after a young actress' fatal blood clot was misdiagnosed as long-covid and anxiety.
Emily Chesterton, 30, had been complaining of calf pain and shortness of breath when she went to her local GP surgery in Crouch End, London, believing she was booked to see a GP.
Instead, unbeknown to her, she was seen on two occasions by a physician associate, who has significantly less training and different qualifications to a doctor. She was wrongly prescribed medication to slow her heart rate.

Emily, a talented actress originally from Boothstown in Salford, tragically died on October 31 last year after suffering a cardiac arrest.
An inquest earlier this year heard the physician associate should have advised her to go A&E. If Emily had, she likely would have received treatment for a pulmonary embolism and survived.
Her devastated parents, Brendan and Marion Chesterton, who still live in Salford, are now calling for closer monitoring of physician associates within GP practices, and for it to be mandatory for them to make patients aware they are not seeing a qualified doctor.
Nigel Edwards, who is chief executive of the think tank the Nuffield Trust, said patients should have the choice to say: "I'd rather see a doctor."
Speaking to BBC Radio 4 Today this week, he said that patients 'don't necessarily know who they are or what to expect' when dealing with physician associates, who are supposed to support doctors in making diagnoses.
Emily's parents say they are extremely worried about a new government scheme outlined in their future workforce document, which sets out plans
