Two bugs that are known to destroy grass are likely to increase in numbers in the coming weeks, an expert has warned.
Gardeners are being urged to keep an eye out for Leatherjackets and Chafer Grubs that thrive in mild weather conditions seen across Britain this summer.
According to Lawn experts at GreenThumb, both pests can attack a lawn to such a degree that an expert may have to be brought in to revive it. Specialist Steve Taylor has raised the alert as the next two months is prime time for larvae to flourish and homeowners who want to keep their grass pristine need to "be vigilant".
Some of the lawn damage the pair can collectively cause includes colour loss, bald spots and attracting larger animals that can also cause destruction.
As reported by Wales Online, Steve Taylor said: “Leatherjackets and Chafer Grubs are a lawn’s worst nightmare and homeowners must be vigilant over the next two months as it’s a prime time for population growth. The weather conditions are set to be perfect for the two pests to thrive in and failure to deal with these destructive bugs can lead to the demise of gardens.”
Gardeners may notice Leatherjackets coming out of the grass or see damage along the borders of lawns. At the start of the infestation, they eat the grass root from the outside of the lawn inwards.
Crucially, September is when the female Leatherjackets start laying eggs, so it’s essential to catch the pests early. Failure to do so will see them grow into adults by February and the damage to the grass can be devastating.
Chafer Grub infestations, on the other hand, may occur in August and September and will lead to your lawn losing colour in certain areas, appearing a paler green. Birds, badgers and foxes enjoy eating the Chafer
