Manchester City welcome Chelsea to the Joie Stadium on Sunday for their first home game of the Women's Super League season.
City opened their 2023/24 campaign with a convincing 2-0 win over West Ham last weekend. Leila Ouahabi was sent off for a high boot against West Ham but that was after Lauren Hemp and Jill Roord had found the back of the net.
City were without the prolific Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw who was ruled out through injury. Instead, Chloe Kelly took led the attack with Hemp and Mary Fowler completing the front three.
The 26-year-old Jamaica star is set to make her return against Chelsea. City boss Gareth Taylor said: “Bunny is in good shape, better than last weekend. She’s been with us this week and over the last few days, she’s been training and is in contention for the weekend. So that’s good news. The only other [injury] we have is Demi Stokes who’s getting a little bit closer, but not in time for this weekend.
“It is frustrating but those are the rules,” added Taylor in response to Ouahabi’s three-game ban for her red card against the Hammers.
This weekend’s visitors also started the season on the front foot having beaten Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 on opening day at Stamford Bridge. Taylor hopes to stop them in their tracks this weekend. “They’ve established themselves as a team that has done well over the last few years in many competitions. There’s no doubt about that," he added.
“We went unbeaten at home all last season which was a great achievement and we made a really good start last weekend. I thought we were excellent against West Ham. The performance we put on was top draw.
“To go unbeaten like we did last season is no mean feat. To be able to do that in an ever-increasing WSL standard really is great.”
