For some entrepreneurs, implementing their big idea can take decades, but this scrappy young pair from Manchester have shown that success can be had at any age.
In only two years, Joseph Shenton and James Pullen, both just 21 years old, have worked hard to build Joseph James Furniture Outlet, which is now steadily turning over £100,000 a month.
Having recently upgraded to a warehouse in Altrincham, the best-friends sell high-quality sofas for a fraction of the retail price.
Their journey began when they left Manchester Grammar School in August of 2019, and the business was incorporated in the December of the same year.
Speaking on how it all started, Joseph said: “As I started my gap year, I was looking for a way to make some money. Originally I was going to auctions to look at other items, kettles and things like that, that's when I saw a live auction going on for some sofas.
"I went over, had a look at the tags, quickly researched the sofas on google, and I could see sofas that were selling for £400 with the retailer but were going for £50/£60 at these auctions.
"I thought - there’s money to be made here.”
Joseph started flipping sofas that he sourced at auctions on Facebook Marketplace and Gumtree, and due to the fact he was able to offer massive discounts to customers for untouched sofas, the business thrived from the very beginning.
He said: “They were all selling really quickly because I was able to offer such a cheap price compared to the retail price. I knew early on that if we could get the right stock, that there was good business to be had."
