While most eagle-eyed viewers who spotted Nathan Aspinall's gesture to Jonny Clayton before their World Matchplay final probably thought the Stockport-born darts player was just messing about, there was plenty more to it than that.
Aspinall was looking to secure the biggest win of his career as he faced Clayton at the Winter Gardens in Blackpool, and there was little to separate the two players in the opening stages of the contest, with Aspinall forced to throw some of his best darts to stay in the game at 5-5.
However, from there the script was ripped up. Aspinall produced some astonishing darts to win 11 legs in a row, storming into a 16-5 lead with just two legs separating him from the crown.
The Asp did Stockport proud and recorded an 18-6 win, and while he looked to be the coolest man in the Winter Gardens as he galloped to victory, that couldn't be further from the truth.
As Clayton went to shake Aspinall's hand prior to the contest, the latter produced a typically jovial response as he put his hand out before drawing it back and putting his thumb to his nose and sticking his tongue out. A little joke between pals? Yes, but there was plenty more to the gag.
“I did it to ease the tension," he revealed to MEN Sport. "I was a bag of nerves when I walked on, I won’t lie. I was really nervous all day, to the point where I threw up quite a few times. I was so bad.
"I just wanted it so much and I knew I had a really good chance so I walked on there and I was shaking, so I just thought let’s try and ease the tension a little bit!”
Ease the tension it certainly did and you'd be forgiven for thinking there was nothing at stake as Aspinall soon started to find the treble 20 with ease. So what's next for the newly-crowned
