Back in the 1970s, Gopal Dangol was beginning to make a name for himself as one of the most popular chefs in Kathmandu. Known for his skill and excellent food creations, it wasn't long before he was recognised by a restaurant in the UK who knew he had to be snapped up immediately.
After deciding that Manchester was a great place to call home for him and his family, Gopal and several of his colleagues decided to start a new venture that they aimed to be a milestone for Asian dining in the UK.
After changed plans about the original Kathmandu Project, Gopal decided to go his own way and start a new adventure - an altogether 'greater' project. By 1986, The Great Kathmandu Tandoori Restaurant was born.
A few upgrades and incredible menu changes later, the local family-run business is thriving, with guests choosing to eat in the much-loved restaurant seven days a week.
Although Gopal can still be seen in the kitchen and greeting guests from time to time, the responsibilities have now passed onto his son, Buda Dangol.
Taking on the role of managing director of the business, Buda is committed to ensuring his father's legacy is protected and the restaurant continues to serve delicious traditional Nepalese food to the people of Manchester for many years to come.
Gopal Dangol belives that when creating a menu of food for people to enjoy, nothing should be taken off it, only added. Buda carries on this tradition and aims to find new ways of serving incredible food, as well as creating new and exciting recipes for people to enjoy.
Passionate about bringing a taste of Nepal to the UK, Buda can often be found travelling to Kathmandu in search of new ingredients, recipes and ways of cooking that he can bring back to the restaurant
