Pep Guardiola's decision to move one of his defenders into midfield in possession didn't just transform Manchester City's trophy chances last season.
Guardiola has added one of his full-backs into the defensive midfield area for some time, but last season used his centre-backs at times to push into the central and attacking midfield zones. With John Stones and Manu Akanji looking comfortable in that role, City won the treble.
Reflecting on his manager's tactical innovations, City CEO Ferran Soriano says that while they help the Blues on the pitch they also have an impact off it to keep the players buying into Guardiola's ideas.
“It’s creativity but also very important,” Soriano said, “is he gained the credibility of the players.

“When you talk to the players that played for Pep, what they say is he comes with new ideas and if you follow him, you realise they work. That means that when he asks for something, the players are going to follow him.”
Asked for the secret behind Guardiola's success, Soriano pointed to hard work just as much as his natural talent.
He explained: “He’s a genius. He works very hard, he is the first in the office and is the last to leave. He’s also kind of obsessed so that when we lose he can be difficult to talk to.
“He’s like every top performer that I’ve met, he’s creative and really wants to win and that inspires his players. If I ask him ‘is there a secret?’, he’ll tell me ‘no, hard work, hard work, hard work’. But of course he has the talent.”
