Fergus Ewing will shun the SNP conference in Aberdeen this weekend as the rebel MSP warned the party faced entering a period of "very serious decline". The Inverness MSP is currently appealing his temporary suspension from the Nationalist group of MSPs at Holyrood.
Ewing was handed a one-week ban after he supported a motion of no confidence in Scottish Government minister Lorna Slater earlier this year. He has been a persistent critic of the powersharing agreement at Holyrood between the SNP and Greens.
Ewing said today that Humza Yousaf needed to get the party back on course after its hammering in the Rutherglen and Hamilton West by-election, which saw Labour achieve almost 60 per cent of the vote.
"He has a relatively short window between now and Christmas to turn this around. I have no sense he is planning to do that," he told the Press and Journal.
The MSP continued: “This is the biggest crisis the SNP has faced in its history. Certainly since 1979 and it’s a question of how we react to it. There is no point in delusion and pretending these problems don’t exist.”
Ewing will spend the days of the SNP conference, which runs from Sunday-Tuesday next week, doing constituency work instead. He said the event “isn’t really what it used to be” in terms of robust policy debate.
It comes after the Record reported how some Nationalists have spoken out against Yousaf's strategy to achieve independence. The First Minister has endorsed a conference motion which says the SNP will have a mandate to begin independence negotiations if it wins most seats in Scotland at the next general election.
But Alex Neil, a former Scottish Government minister, said it was "devoid of credibility" following the SNP's hammering at the Rutherglen

Denise Fergus is happy. You can hear it in her voice, see it in her eyes and feel it in the easy, loving banter between her and husband Stuart. Little wonder, given that the pair have just celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary with a renewal of their vows in the same church they got married in, followed afterwards by a big party for family and friends.
