Frenkie de Jong’s arrival would not be a statement signing by Erik ten Hag, according to Manchester United hero Teddy Sheringham.
Despite a principle deal being in place with Barcelona, it seems their £17m wage debt to the player following their Covid pandemic deferment agreement is proving to be a real stumbling block.
The Netherlands midfielder has been included in the Spanish club’s pre-season tour squad ahead of their trip to the USA. De Jong has underlined that his preference is to stay at Barcelona, but Ten Hag still has him as his top summer target.

United fans have been theorising what impact De Jong would have on their team. Sheringham doesn’t believe his arrival would be the signing the club ultimately needs, pointing to other options they could have been chasing.
Speaking to the 8Xbet (via the Daily Mail), he said: “He's a big name but I don't think he is one that is going to set the world alight at United and really come in and grab it by the scruff of the neck.
“If they'd have gone out and broken the bank for Declan Rice or Harry Kane - I know West Ham and Spurs fans are going to castigate me again for saying this sort of thing – but that is what you have got to do to make a statement.
“Ten Hag has got one hell of a job on his hands to change the vibe of the dressing room around but signings like that would change the whole ethos of where Man United are going. The signings that they've made are okay at best…and that is how fans will see it as well.”
