Emmerdale actor Clive Hornby spent eight days in hospital after a filming accident left him with a collapsed lung.
The actor, who was known for playing Jack Sugden in the long running ITV soap for 28 years, was filming a scene involving a tractor when things went wrong. Clive played the role from 1980 until his death in 2008, taking over from Andrew Burt who had portrayed the character from 1972 until 1976. Following the horror accident, he later recalled: "It's all right now but it made me realise that I never wanted to spend eight days again in a hospital.
"I stopped smoking after that. Not cigarettes, cigars. Stupid to smoke cigars, I know, but you could say it was a turning point in my life." Clive tragically passed away from cancer at the age of 63, He had filmed his final scenes on the soap earlier that year, and had denied the rumours about his ill health, insisting he had no plans to leave the show.
Following the news of his death, the soap's series producer at the time, Anita Turner, said: "Clive will be greatly missed by everyone who has worked with him on Emmerdale during the past 28 years. "He was a hugely popular and well-respected member of cast and a terrific actor." In February 2009, the character of Jack was written out of the show, having suffered a heart attack off-screen. A touching funeral scene was aired, with a ghostly image of Jack saying a final farewell to his wife Diane Sugden (played by Elizabeth Estensen).
