Emmerdale star Katherine Dow Blyton has criticised soap bosses for the way they handled her character's exit.
The actress portrayed Harriet Finch in the ITV soap from 2013 until 2022. Harriet was killed off during Emmerdale's 50th anniversary in October 2022. She fell off a quad bike during a huge storm and was then crushed by the bike after an explosion.
Actress Katherine has now opened up about leaving Emmerdale and her reaction when she was informed her character would be killed off.
The star also shared her thoughts on Harriet's development on the soap, criticising bosses' storylines for the character. “I went up [to the office] and they basically said, ‘We love Harriet and we're going to give her a good death'. I did sit there for ten seconds thinking, have I done something wrong? They say don't take it personally but it's impossible not to," Katherine admitted on the Soap From The Box podcast.
She added: “I was taken aback. I said, ‘Well you don't know what to do with me anyway, do you?’ I tried to get out of the building, sat in my car and burst into tears because it was a shock." However, the actress admitted she had been ready to exit the soap "for a while". She also said she is "glad" ITV bosses made the decision to take Harriet out of the soap, as she probably wouldn't have "been brave enough" to decide to leave herself.
Harriet had been a policewoman before becoming a vicar in the soap. She then reverted back to working as a policewoman again - a twist Katherine was not happy about. The actress said she felt "uncomfortable in my own skin" as it "just felt wrong" for Harriet to be returning to her job as a policewoman.
