Emmerdale New Year spoilers with new arrival, return of familiar face and tragedy for two families

Christmas is set to be 'edgier' this year for Emmerdale and the New Year is set to get off to a mixed start for the villagers with tragedy for some as well as the arrival of new and familiar faces for some.
Earlier this year, the ITV soap's producer Laura Shaw revealed that the long-running show had pushed aside the 'fluffier' celebrations for something 'quite different in tone'.
She told the Manchester Evening News and other press at the time: "We’ve got some exciting plans but I have absolutely, definitely been sworn to secrecy on this one! What I can tell you is that the last couple of years, we’ve kind of done a light, fluffier Christmas for Emmerdale, but this one is quite different in tone.

"A lot of it is edgier for us for Christmas and I can tell you that definitely not every one of our villagers will be sat down eating their turkey with all the trimmings on Christmas day."
Now, Laura has given fans a glimpse at what is to come in 2024, starting with a new face that will throw a 'spanner' in the works for the family. "We've heard mention before of Nicky's mum and Caleb's wife. We've just heard little bits from Caleb where he's said it's all over between them and there's nothing going on. But is that really true?" Laura teased.
"In the New Year, we'll see Ruby bursting onto our screens. She's going to be an absolute firecracker [and] she's going to put a real spanner into the Dingles. Is her and Caleb's relationship really as over as he's made out? We'll find out in the New Year."
