Originally from Kent, Farage followed his stockbroker dad into the financial world. He worked as a commodities trader in the City Of London during the 1980s and was known as anti-European.
Despite joining the Conservative Party in 1978, he left in 1992 after he perceived then-PM John Major's signing of the Euro-friendly Maastricht Treaty as going against his own Euroscepticism. In 1993, he helped to found UKIP, along with members of the Anti-Federalist League.
Farage was elected to the European Parliament in 1999 and re-elected in 2004, 2009 and 2014, serving as an MEP. He became leader of the party in 2006, serving until 2009 and again from 2010 to 2016.
