The leader of Edinburgh City Council has appealed for the public to help identify dozens of yobs who have attacked police officers with fireworks and petrol bombs on Bonfire Night.
Around 100 masked youths have caused carnage in the Niddrie area of Edinburgh this evening with terrifying footage showing riot police being struck by projectiles and rockets.
Officers have been seen in a line of defence trying to protect the community as they are hit with fireworks with cars and houses also being blasted.
A number of roads in the area have been closed with bus services diverted.
City of Edinburgh Council leader Cammy Day has said he has been "appalled" by the scenes and hoped the culprits would be brought to justice.
City of Edinburgh Council leader Cammy Day said: “I’m appalled to see the scenes in Niddrie this evening. We’ve been clear that this sort of conduct is unacceptable.
“We’ve been working hard throughout the year in our communities to mitigate Bonfire Night-related disruption so it is extremely disappointing to see a minority of people behaving in this way.
“This reckless behaviour endangers lives and, like the majority of people in the community, I share in their dismay and upset at this disgraceful behaviour.
