BBC soap star James Alexandrou was back on the set of EastEnders 17 years after his exit as he took on a behind-the-scenes role. The 38 year old, who is best known for playing Martin Fowler on the soap, first appeared on Albert Square in 1996. Fans of the show will remember Martin as the bad boy son of Arthur and Pauline Fowler.
James's character was central to many of the show’s most iconic storylines, such as fathering a child with Sonia Jackson as teens before accidentally killing her fiancé, Jamie Mitchell. But the TV star stepped down from his role in 2007 to explore other opportunities in his industry, as BBC bosses tied in his exit with his Sonia co-star, Natalie Cassidy. James has since been cast in a number of theatre roles, however, he recently returned to EastEnders, turning his talents to directing.
Speaking on Johnny Seifert's Secure The Insecure mental health podcast, James revealed: "I kind of did go back [to EastEnders] recently; I shadowed as a director. "So, you go and follow the director and see how they direct the show, and it just so happened that James Bye was on, on the day that I was shadowing. I didn't know that he knew I was there," he told the host.
"I think he apparently caught wind of it, and he came on to do a scene, and he kind of went, 'Oh, it's you,' and we just kind of had this strange moment. "It was a really strange moment because we don't know each other at all, and the only thing that bonds us are these words on a page called Martin Fowler, you know, that was a really nice moment." James joked that he would love to have a full-circle moment that would see him bossing around his old co-star Natalie. "It's the most intense arena for a director to be in," James explained.
