When Hugo Stafford started suffering from fatigue and a high temperature, doctors thought he might have had a viral infection.
His mum Breeze Rowan took him to hospital where tests revealed his blood count was critically low, increasing his risk of catching infections.
The three-year-old, from Middleton, was transferred to Manchester Royal Children’s Hospital and treated with antibiotics.

Testing was carried out on his bone marrow but medics were unable to figure out what was making him so unwell.
Once the tot’s temperature stabilised, he was allowed to go home but made to return for weekly blood tests.
Over time, Hugo’s blood count managed to double and his condition improved.
But on July 3, three months after he first fell ill, the youngster’s temperature spiked again. Breeze, 21, rushed the tot to A&E where blood test showed his white blood cells were very low once more.
He was treated with antibiotics again and discharged while medics took another look at his bone marrow. Within days, the family were called into hospital to discuss Hugo’s results.
There, they were given the devastating news. Hugo had leukaemia.
Nursery nurse Breeze can barely remember the moments that followed. “No parent should have to hear this,” she told the Manchester Evening News.
“When I did, I completely zoned out. I couldn’t even respond to the doctors.
“Then I had to ring Hugo’s dad Alex who was at work and tell him the news. This was just the worst – telling people my boy has cancer is just something I never thought I’d be doing.
“But he’s strong. He’s a fighter and he’s got this.”
