Investigations into alleged racist comments on a WhatsApp group which led to the sacking of five firefighters last year has resulted in another four leaving the service. All nine staff are from the same station in Greater Manchester.
The Manchester Evening News reported that the five had been sacked in March last year after an inquiry which began in 2021. Now a second inquiry into four others has seen them all leave.
County Fire Officer, Dave Russel, said: "In respect of this station there were two complaints made. The first was in 2021 and then a second in early 2023. The first complaint involved five members of staff and it was in relation to to messaging on a WhatsApp group. All five individuals were investigated - all on the same watch. Three of those were dismissed and two members of staff resigned. But importantly the case still went ahead with the cases of the two who resigned in their absence and the outcome was that those two individuals would have been dismissed."
He said that in regard to the same watch and the same WhatsApp group a further complaint was received at the beginning of this year involving another set of messages and images that had been posted allegedly involving another four staff.
He confirmed that again the content was allegedly racist and all four had been suspended then disciplinary action taken against them. One of the four was sacked after a disciplinary hearing; a second resigned but was dismissed in his absence at a hearing; a third retired but was dismissed in his absence; and a fourth has retired but a disciplinary hearing will still be held for him in his absence.
