GMP say that offensive chants by football fans will not be tolerated ahead of the Manchester derby. Manchester United are set to take on Manchester City in the 191st derby between the clubs.
In a statement released to fans, GMP have promised to leave 'no stone unturned' to ensure the safety of match going fans and the wider public. The police force say they are working closely with local authorities like the British Transport Police, Transport for Greater Manchester and both football clubs in 'orchestrating a seamless event' without concern for abuse or criminal behaviour.
In a strong statement, Chief Superintendent Colette Rose of GMP’s Trafford District, said that there will be a crackdown on any offensive chanting. The statement comes days after two young Manchester City fans were suspended over 'vile' Sir Bobby Charlton fans.
Chief Superintendent, Colette Rose said: "We want everyone watching the match, whether at the stadium, a local pub, or even if you're not watching the match, to be safe, happy, and enjoy their weekend. Regardless of the game's outcome, we hope that we remain one united Manchester.
We will not tolerate racism, homophobia, misogyny, or any offensive chanting or behaviour, whether it occurs inside the stadium or in the public domain. Respect for one another is a fundamental aspect of this game, and we will enforce this principle rigorously.
"If you're in the stadium, please don't hesitate to raise any concerns regarding abuse or criminality with the stewarding staff who are also there to support you. They are well-equipped to alert our officers, who will respond swiftly.
"For those outside the stadium, traveling, or in a public space, please feel free to approach our officers and engage with them
