"I just have to be grateful for my father and my mum because they made me the right way, the strong way," Fernandes laughed in the mixed zone after two draining hours against Liverpool. Fernandes had run his socks off and, it seemed, his boots. He strode into the area in flip flops.
It is telling that three of the five outfield players who lasted the duration of the epic against Liverpool - Fernandes, Diogo Dalot and Alejandro Garnacho - have not succumbed to an injury that has prevented them from playing in a season where United have recorded 51 separate cases of injury or illness.
The trio have young children. Garnacho and Dalot welcomed their firstborns, Enzo and Clara, in October and November. Fernandes has a seven-year-old daughter, Matilde, and three-year-old son Goncalo.
