Charter Loses 101,000 Pay TV Subs, CEO Touts "Opportunity" in Streaming Services

After a year-long delay, Canadian musician Powfu finally released his Otterpop-produced SoundCloud hit, “Death Bed,” to all streaming platforms on Friday. The lo-fi hip-hop track was held back from wide release because of its prominent sample of Filipino-British singer beabadoobee’s “Coffee.”

Tubi says it’s continuing to gain momentum, drawing more viewers to its free-streaming service — and driving up more overall viewing time.

Over the past year, 95 million people in the U.S. used a major streaming service, 68 million were self-paying, 25 million had access through a family plan, 13 million were on a free trial, and nearly 11 million were “mooching,” or sharing a log-in that was not from an authorized family plan.

Whether music or podcasts, on-demand listening is the greatest change to recorded music in the last decade. Yet satellite radio -- launched before iTunes revolutionized how music is purchased -- continues to thrive as streaming services flourish. SiriusXM's 2019 earnings report, which dropped Tuesday, shows that the satellite radio service added 1 million subscribers and grossed $7.8 billion of revenue over the year.

After closing an $11.7 billion merger in December, ViacomCBS is expected to unveil a new streaming service in late February that draws from strengths of its recombined companies, a source confirms to The Hollywood Reporter.ViacomCBS, led by CEO Bob Bakish, is planning an expansion of CBS All Access, the streamer that launched in 2014, that would encompass brands like Comedy Central, Paramount Network, BET, MTV and CBS News, among other offerings.

Pluto TV, the ViacomCBS-owned free streaming service, will be available on Hisense TV sets through a pact with Hisense’s Vidaa International subsidiary.

In the year-ago period, it had added 346,000.

Telecom giant Verizon on Thursday reported that it lost 51,000 net pay TV subscribers for its Fios consumer video service in the fourth quarter, compared with a loss of 46,000 in the year-ago period and a loss of 67,000 in the third quarter.The company also added more mobile phone subscribers who pay a monthly bill in the fourth quarter than expected thanks in part to its Disney+ promotion.
