Veteran TV presenter Eamonn Holmes has leapt to the defence Brendan Rodgers as the Celtic boss comes under fire over his “good girl” comment to BBC Scotland reporter Jane Lewis.
Belfast-born Holmes backed Rodgers and claimed the term is widely used in Rodgers’ native Northern Ireland. It comes after the Parkhead gaffer was branded a “dinosaur” by a spokesperson for the Scottish Feminist Network.
But while Holmes defended Rodgers on GB News, his co-host Isabel Webster said his comment was “belittling”. As they discussed the interview, Holmes said: “He meant good girl. Brendan Rodgers is from Carnlough in Northern Ireland. We say ‘good girl’ all the time. I can honestly tell you that Northern Irish people will say ‘good girl, good boy, good lad’. We are admonished for it all the time because it’s not contemporary.”
However, co-host Webster said: “He sounds a bit annoyed and she is not a girl, she’s a woman. You can see why it’s raised some eyebrows."
Following Sunday’s last-gasp win for Celtic over Motherwell at Fir Park with reduced Rangers' lead at the top of the Scottish Premiership to two points, Rodgers was irked when Lewis asked him to explain what he meant when he said “the story has already been written” this season. Asked to elaborate, he responded: “No, no, you know exactly what I mean.”
When Lewis asked again, Rodgers abruptly ended the interview, saying: “Are we done? Good girl, well done.” A spokesperson for the Scottish Feminist Network said: “Jane Lewis was just doing her job, trying to extract an explanation from Brendan Rodgers on his cryptic comment. That the go-to attitude was condescension is quite illuminating, but really very depressing in 2024. We thought dinosaurs were extinct.”
