Dazzling Daizen Maeda looks a new man after ditching his trademark skinhead and Celtic had their cult hero to thank for helping them survive a few hairy moments yesterday.
The Japan ace completed a hat-trick with just four minutes to go to finally see off brave Livingston and secure safe passage to the Scottish Cup semi-finals. Kyogo completed the job but for spells Celtic fans were pulling out their hair out with their side missing chances and leaking goals at the other end.
Twice Maeda notched and both times Livi hit back, with Dan MacKay and Tete Yengi silencing Celtic Park. But eventually the pressure told and Maeda got his rewards for a relentless display – in his 100th Hoops appearance as well. His goals did the damage but it wasn’t just that. There was a point the wide man got a standing ovation for chasing a lost cause the full width of the pitch and winning his side a throw in high up the park.
It wasn’t just him though. This was the afternoon Nicolas Kuhn finally arrived at Celtic. The £3m wide man limped off before the winner but he showed some fans have been perhaps too quick to write him off. It was harsh on Livi who were fairly heroic at times.
But Celtic have played worst and won by more. That doesn’t mean there are still not problems here for Brendan Rodgers. There were a few more spaces than usual in the Celtic Park stands – but it was the gaps on the team sheet that would have got some punters feeling nervous at kick-off. Cameron Carter-Vickers sitting this one out with a sore hamstring was a worry, with captain Callum McGregor also facing an uncertain few weeks with an Achilles problem.
Chuck in long-term crock Reo Hatate and suspended star Yang, and it left the Parkhead side looking a tad patchwork.
