Last week, the city was full of joy, colour, and noise as LGBTQ+ people celebrated Pride.
In the middle of it all was Adele Ramsbottom, the General Manager of the New Union on Canal Street. For her, that’s not a new feeling.
Her family have run the pub since the end of 2004, so this Pride was her 18th as a businesswoman, but she’s been to many, many more as a reveller. Originally from Worsley, Adele now manages the pub with her friendly four-legged companions, Willow and Sandy.

So, what does she make of her home city?
What’s so special about Manchester Pride?
Years ago, when I used to come down before we had the pub, it was just being out in the street and the happy spirit. I remember, years ago in the 90s, it was raining one year and people were dancing out in the street. That was magical.
Where’s your favourite hidden gem?
I like all the secret bars, so I like Behind Closed Doors.
What’s your favourite view of the city or in the city?
I like it from 20 Stories!
Where’s best to go for your dinner in town?
The Ivy, on the deal. It’s two courses for £19 or something like that.
Where would you take someone to show them the real Manchester?
I already know this, I have a little route. We walk down Canal Street, went through Ancoats and Cutting Room Square.
Then we went down Oldham Street and along the canals to Castlefield. It’s a full tour.
What’s your favourite Mancunian neighbourhood?
I suppose Peter Street and Deansgate.
What are the five words that best describe the city?
Walkable, friendly, vibrant, rainy, and modern.
City or United?
